This was composed during Feb'2009, but i'm posting this today! duh!
This evening we had an open house session with our Head of Human Resources and Head of the Department on the eminent layoffs and how the sinking firm planned to pay the employees their final dues on the matters pertaining to final settlement.
My colleagues, understandably agitated, had a barrage of questions to shoot across to the “Leaders”. The next half an hour, I was to witness a discussion between “The Enlightened” Business Leaders thrusting upon their pedestrian solutions to the harried employees seeking legitimate solutions to their woes.
The questions were as simple as employees asking “why is this happening” and the “Leaders” answering “unfortunate events over the past week has had us in this compromising situation”. Unfortunate Events? Well, for the uninitiated, it just means that the colossal failure on the part of the management to manage their business has led to the employees being sacked hither thither. Hollow? I realised at the end, this is how leaders are – grossly incompetent & inadequate at coming up with imaginative solutions combined with ineptness at handling business issues. However their only saving grace is their overzealous adeptness at countering employee concerns with unenthusiastic statements like “We’re going to look at it, but cannot promise it”, “we’re not going to entertain it cos its goanna set a bad precedent”. Then what the devil are you the Head of HR, i was wondering!!
To inform you, the employee concerns I was talking about here only relate to the salary concerns on which an average middle class employee ekes out a life after she’s had paid through her nose the back breaking EMI’s .
A few days ago we had a decidedly sure footed mail from our Head of HR asking us to communicate to our friends, family and well wishers that it is “Business as Usual” at the organization and our “Ethical Business Practices” has held us in good stead and that the negative fallouts on account of the parent company in the dock will in no way affect us. Also, we were assured that “we’re continuing to grow as a “Fastest Growing Company” in the competition”. Now, as on the expected lines, we have the media following the parent company trail digging deep into the “Ethical Business Practices” of our firm, almost unsettling the wits of our clients. Unable to hold to their wits end, our clients suddenly decide not to do business with us and we’re caught unawares. Here we have our leaders instead of talking & reassuring the clients decide to re assure us about the “Efficient” handling of business at the organization by laying us off!!!!
So much for the leaders wanting to manage their Business without people they so proudly recruited and stated “every Employee is a True Leader”. Don’t these words sound hollow now? Here I demand the resignation of the so called “Leaders” for their gigantic failure in not being able to manage Business & People. To all you LEADERS – Put in your papers first and then we’ll follow suit. The mistake committed by you cannot be borne by your hardworking employees.
So, starting next week, it’s going to be “Business As usual” at my ex organization and I can happily go about telling my friends and well wishers that we have been “ethically” laid off keeping in perspective the “dynamic needs of the Business”.
